About the Juror
Rod Weagant

When Rod Weagant first went to Alaska in 1966, to serve in the Army at Fort Richardson, he fell in love with the state. He eventually found himself working in the National Park service in Anchorage. In 1973, he accidentally wandered into an exhibition of paintings by some of the great Alaskan landscape artists. He was most impressed by the power of Sydney Lawrence’s work and the simple honesty of Ted Lambert’s paintings. The outdoor life of these painters so appealed to Rod, that he immediately quit his government job and entered art school. While in the University of Washington, his mentor, Jacob Lawrence, the Harlem Renaissance artist, gave him the challenge “to do the thing you feel most passionate about”.

Rod Weagant has spent over 45 years trying to communicate the wonder he feels about our natural world. Through oil paint and canvas, Rod has balanced his academic formalist background with the pure emotional response he feels when surrounded by the landscape of Alaska and the western US. Living for 10 years in a cabin in the remote community of Haines, AK, deepened his commitment, especially the need to document the landscape painting plein aire and translating that information to his larger studio work. He now works from a studio in the small North Central Washington of Twisp.

Ron has had over 45 one-man exhibitions including 7 museum shows and conducts workshops in both plein aire and studio painting, throughout the west.
