Patterns of Behavior – Lindsay Breidenthal

“My paintings capture the atmosphere of emotion in layers of paint. Themes of control and stability are explored through familiar imagery, landscapes, and domestic interiors. Building on many thin, transparent layers of color leaves space around the particles of pigment for light to enter and bounce around. With each thin, tinted layer I can adjust the color of light to the mood or memory I am trying to convey. By overlapping patterns and imagery, I set a disorientating stage and allude to something just out of the picture or off in the distance, movement that might be spooking an animal or catching the attention of a subject. I like to confront the feeling that things are not as they seem and that there is a conversation of energy happening that may be overlooked. The subjects in my paintings are responding to their environment instinctively and I try to capture what might be a physical or psychological snapshot of that moment.”

“The work in this exhibit reflects several years of documenting the complex and often troubled relationship we have with land, landscape, and place.”
