Inspiration/Exploration: Art Quilts by SAQA Members

Inspiration/Exploration is a juried exhibit organized by the Washington State Region of Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA). SAQA is a non-profit organization with members throughout the world whose mission is to promote the art quilt.

Visit SAQA’s website here.

Members of the Washington Region were asked to identify the inspirational qualities of Washington State, and then to explore that inspiration in their artwork.

The juror of the show is Sheila Frampton Cooper, an artist, teacher, and studio art quilter who has lived in California as well as France. She has won awards in major exhibits throughout the United States. In her juror statement, Sheila cited the diversity of interpretations of the theme as a highlight of the exhibit.

A total of 41 quilts and 4 three-dimensional pieces were juried into this exhibit, representing 26 artists.

The Washington Region of SAQA has over 200 current members, located throughout the state. Its members have recently shown work in Contemporary Quilt Association exhibitions, 2024 American Quilter’s Society QuiltWeek in Paducah, and the Quilt and Fiber Arts Festival 2024, among other shows.

Deborah Ann – Possibilites in Fabric

Deborah Ann has been an artist ever since she can remember. As a child she did artwork in her bedroom before getting a floor loom and being allowed to take over a part of the basement.

In the early 1960’s Ann found weaving, then macrame and crocheting and finally fabric art in the early 70’s, and she’s followed that path ever since. Ann loves to push the fabric medium to see how far from quilts and close to painting she can get without actually using paint.

Lorena Marie Persephony Garcia – A Wonder of Color

“My name is Lorena Marie Garcia, and I am delighted to present my show, A Wonder of Color. This exhibition centers on my distinctive use of color and nature, as well as my unique, one-of-a-kind abstract linear paintings.

The vibrant colors in my artwork are deeply inspired by my childhood experiences and the vivid hues that surrounded me. Utilizing a linear abstract style grants a profound sense of movement and depth within my creations. This dynamic approach encourages viewers to immerse themselves fully in the captivating world of my colorful paintings.

I invite you to explore the interplay of color and linear form in my work, as it encapsulates not only my artistic journey but also a celebration of the natural world’s beauty.”
