Native American Prints from the Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts Collection

Gallery One is thrilled to partner with Crows Shadow Institute (CSI) to offer a joint printmaking exhibition from their permanent collection. Gallery One and CWU’s Sarah Spurgeon Gallery will collectively display 75 works covering a broad scope of artistic styles and voices by native artists who have completed residencies and worked with master printers at CSI facilities.
Since 1992, Crow’s Shadow Institute has been serving Native American artists and communities and pursuing their vision to inspire a world enriched and elevated by Indigenous creativity. In the three decades since its founding, CSIA has emerged as a premier studio, renowned for advancing Native voices in contemporary fine art printmaking, while championing the preservation of Indigenous artistic traditions. Nestled at the foothills of Oregon’s Blue Mountains on the traditional homelands of the Umatilla, Walla Walla, and Cayuse people (CTUIR), CSIA stands as a beacon for artistic innovation and cultural continuity.
Their printmaking studio hosts four to six artists annually for two-week residencies, where each artist works with a highly skilled collaborative printmaker to create lithographic editions, and/or a series of monoprints or monotypes. While marketing and selling these works on behalf of the artists, Crow’s Shadow retains two prints from each edition or series, one for its locally-housed permanent collection and one for its off-site archives at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University in Salem, OR. The collection now includes over two hundred works by more than sixty resident artists.

Yakima River Canyon – Julie Devine

Julie Devine is a contemporary American painter. Born in California in 1968, she moved to Washington state in 1991.  Her work explores the wild visual beauty of Western and Pacific North America, celebrates its expanse, and abstracts its forms.

Julie paints from the landscape, combining gestural brushwork and knifework into a distinctive semi-abstract style. Her art communicates a spirited appreciation for the outdoors and for the tradition of painting, in particular the impressionist, post-impressionist, modernist, and abstract expressionist styles.
