Danny Koen
Danny Koen began drawing again at the age of 60 after retiring from a career as an iron worker and serving in Korea and Vietnam from 1969 to 1970.Danny’s artistic journey started at the age of seven and continued throughout his life, including during his time in the military. While serving, he created sketches that he shared with fellow soldiers. After returning from Vietnam, he primarily sketched as a hobby, fitting it into his busy life as a full-time worker and family man. His wife of over 40 years encouraged him to prioritize family time, leading him to set aside his drawing.
Following the passing of his wife in 2018, Danny turned back to art as a way to cope with grief, loss, and anxiety. This return sparked a renewed focus on detailed portrait drawing, a style that requires patience and meticulous attention to detail, with each piece taking between 12 to 22 hours to complete.
In 2019, Danny relocated from Southern California to Moses Lake, where he joined the Desert Artists, a group of talented local artists who explore a variety of styles and media.
At the age of 73, this exhibition marks Danny’s first solo showcase since rekindling his artistic skills. His portrait work features famous figures from film and music, and he is open to special requests, including family portraits.
