Kittitas County Juried Exhibit
Curated by Kathleen Moles
Museum of Northwest Art (MONA) Head Curator

With over $3500 in awards, our annual juried exhibit shows off the best work being created in our county. Works in all mediums will be selected by Kathleen Moles. Awards will be announced at 6:30pm on opening night of the show. Check back here for a list of award recipients. And see all of the submissions here.

Juror Statement:

Thank you to all of the artists who sent in images; I enjoyed seeing the range of subject matter and styles as well as the variety of mediums and sizes of the submitted works, and aimed to reflect this diversity in the selections I made. A few themes surfaced in the selections, including a distinct sense of place — cosmic, earthly, or somewhere in between; structure; and a fair amount of quirkiness of subject matter and execution in several of the works. It was a challenge to narrow the field to the final pieces. 60 artists entered, 165 images were reviewed, and the final selection numbered 33 works.

Susan Mulligan – Shades of Gray

In this study of gray, artist Susan Mulligan, experiments with subtle pigmentation, expressing a surprising amount of nuance and life due to the variety of tones and hints of color. Susan’s interpretation of the technique called grisaille involves the application of thin, transparent glazes of oil and colorful pigment over a neutral image. The image beneath provides the structure for the final painting, remaining visible through the layers of color. This mixed media work includes Susan’s photographic images, encaustic, textile, oil paint, & found objects to create a carousel of grays in nature’s beauty of all seasons.
