Merrily Tompkins
Influenced primarily by her father and brother, the rough-edged and quirky art of Merrily Tompkins weaves together the spiritual, the emotional, the visual and the tactile. Her works share stories through layering and souvenirs. According to the artist, making art helps her to make sense of and deal with the scary and exhilarating prospect of being alive and human. She enjoys using objects that have been used and handled, juxtaposing precious and humble materials and repurposing them to represent a yin and yang, or a soulful resonance.
On the Mezzanine:
The Alchemy of Change
Rebecca DeVere
Rebecca DeVere grew up with artist parents and has dedicated her life to art since she was a child. Nineteen years ago while studying at Minneapolis College of Art and Design, her paintings became fractured. Her instructor suggested leaning into the disjointedness. This pursuit led to thirteen years of running a successful mosaic and Picassiette business. Her mosaic career has given her the opportunity to have many TV interviews, and press and magazine features. For health reasons she must stop making mosaics. This show, “The Alchemy of Change” depicts her switch back to painting, the disassembling of mosaics and Picassiette, and the issues that come to light when trying to change and re-invent oneself.
