THE ANCIENT FUTURE:
A Light-reactive Media Show
by DON O'CONNOR
Exhibition Dates: May 1-30, 2009
Opening Reception: Friday, May 1 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Described as surrealistic, neoclassical, cubist, impressionistic, abstract, representational, expressionism by the artist himself, the works of Don O’Connor can definitely be called eclectic. Well known for some of his mural works in Roslyn, including the image of Marlon Brando on the Roslyn Theater and the now famous camel on the Roslyn Café (shown in the intro to the famous TV show, Northern Exposure), O’Connor’s more recent works incorporate holographic vinyl, delaminated CD coverings, Mylar, foil paper and other light-reactive media. When viewed from certain angles, these materials give off a spectrum of changing color, intensity and illumination as the light source or the viewer engages in motion, thus adding a kinetic aspect to otherwise static artwork.
Many of O’Connor’s works have an underlying abstracted floral theme. Focusing on pure composition rather than pictorial imagery, his works often emulate stained glass, mosaic, jewelry, quilting and basketry, in an effort on the artist’s part to make his work communicate with a more universal aesthetic.
Don O’Connor has worked in light-reactive materials since 1995, but has been making art since kindergarten. He has worked in stoneware pottery, acrylic paint, jewelry, murals, and collage. He makes his home in Ellensburg, WA.
