ABSTRACTION

Sam Albright
Majka Sadel
Austin Smith

As part of its 40th Anniversary celebration, Gallery One Visual Arts Center presents ABSTRACTION, its fourth in a series of six thematic group shows for 2008. Historically, abstract painting in America intensified as a movement called Abstract Expressionism during the late 1940’s and into the early 1960’s. Probably the most well known painter of this era was Jackson Pollock. He became famous for dripping paint across huge canvases laid on the floor of his small garage studio in New York. Pollock and his peers broke many rules, allowing us to rethink what a work of art is as well as how it could be made.

Our exhibit features the works of three mature artists from our region: Sam Albright, Majka Sadel and Austin Smith. Like their predecessors, their paintings contain a raw, boundless energy with strong emotional impact. Albright’s work is inspired by unique and sometimes bizarre forms in nature. Sadel’s layered paintings reveal a deep and personal vocabulary that offer a slow revelation into her world. Smith’s works are often based on landscapes with an interest in exploring the use of unusual materials such as volcanic ash and fish eggs. As is true with many abstract artists, all three are concerned with the way light emanates from the work.
