Between 2003 and 2006, photographer Marie Jose Durquet traveled to Haiti four times, for visits ranging from a few weeks to a few months. She initially went there to accompany her husband who worked as a pediatrician at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital, but was soon asked to do photo-documentation of the hospital and the surrounding community. This work brought her into contact with many segments of the population, particularly children who were patients at the hospital. Many of Haiti’s children are affected by poverty, malnutrition, HIV, Tuberculosis and health problems rarely seen in the United States. But beyond the patients she encountered in the hospital, she also met children who were able to do what most people associate with childhood: playing with friends, going to school and participating in normal activities such as music and sports. This exhibition documents her travels to this country and the interactions she had with children who experience the best and worst of life at a very young age.
