Kim PowersKim Powers has lived and raised her family in the Northwest. She divides her time between two small farms, one in Chattaroy, Washington, and one in Sagle, Idaho, on the Pend-O’Reille river. Her art is greatly influenced by these rural settings. Found objects—stones, twigs, rusted pieces of metal, and tree bark, are incorporated with rich Batik fabrics to create three-dimensional and multi-textual works of art. Line is expressed through hand stitched, multi-colored threads. The natural materials Powers uses in her work evoke an awareness and appreciation of the organic world in which both she and her viewers live.
Kim Powers studied design and sculpture at Mills College in Oakland, California, and design and drawing at the University of Washington in Seattle. She then finished her studies in oil painting and received a Bachelors of Arts degree from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Having worked in a variety of media, she is currently working with textiles. The Lorinda Knight Gallery in Spokane has carried her work since 2002 and has featured her in two one-woman shows. She has also participated in a Fabric Art Show at the Spokane Art School.
Kathy CraigKathy Craig has always loved arts, crafts, color and texture-- sewing and crafts have been an ever-present and important part of Craig’s life. She turned her love of sewing to quilt-making when her children were young; quilting has now become her passion. She began painting with watercolors several years ago and found that it opened up a whole new world. “I love watercolors because of the way the colors flow into each other, and because of the textures and effects they create that you can’t get in any other medium,” says Craig. She returned to school to study design and web development, and through the graphic and fine art classes she took, she found herself being pushed into new areas such as abstraction, which she now embraces in her work.
Craig’s current work translates her paintings and
drawings into quilts, a process which satisfies all of her creative
urges and feeds her love of textile and color.
