February 21-24
(Silent Auction 1:00-5:00pm Feb. 24)
This February David and Carol Cross will again host artist Alexander Chitungo, a stone sculptor from Zimbabwe. This will be Chitungo’s third visit to the region where he has given sculpting workshops and lectures at CWU and Gallery One in the past. Born in 1969 in the small town of Marondera, Zimbabwe, Chitungo is the second born in a family of six children. He completed his schooling at Prince Edward School in Harare in 1986 and began sculpting in 1990 as a result of his contacts with Tonderai Marezva and Lincoln Meteta, both renowned sculptors in Zimbabwe. Two years later, Chitungo left them to develop his own fluid, abstract style which emphasizes motion.
You are invited to watch Alexander Chitungo work on his stone sculptures at Gallery One February 21 – 24. This is an outstanding opportunity to witness the completion of a Shona stone sculpture, by a renowned artist. Some of the pieces he has completed while in residence here at the gallery will be auctioned off on February 24. Be here from 1:00 – 5:00pm to watch the final detailing and bid during a silent auction.
In addition Big Bend CC will be hosting Chitungo on February 20 with a lecture and a 2 hour demonstration. For questions about the artist or the events please contact Gallery One at (509) 925-2670
