"Walkscapes": a photographic exhibition by Michael Sherwin

Gallery One's Eveleth Green Gallery
September 1 - 30
Opening Reception: Friday, September 1, 5 - 7 pm

For the work included in “Walkscapes,” Michael Sherwin uses a plastic toy camera called a Holga. This camera allows him to randomly advance the film, intentionally overlapping frames in order to fill the entire roll with perpetual sequences and multiple layers of imagery. He then contact prints the roll of film, ending up with a seamless, thin strip of visual information surrounded by several inches of black. With this work, Sherwin wanted to communicate the feeling of moving though space, mapping his experience and translating the process of looking. Each piece is a visual journey based on a virtual experience and the heightened awareness of his immediate surroundings. The end result is a series of separate expeditions that explore the barrage of imagery within multiple textures of time and space.

Michael Sherwin is Central Washington University’s new Visiting Artist and Lecturer in Photography and Digital Imaging. He first moved to the Northwest in 1999, and in 2004 received his MFA in photography from the University of Oregon. His work has won numerous awards and has been exhibited and published widely at the national level. In September, Sherwin also has a solo exhibition, “Flux and Form,” at the PUNCH Gallery in Seattle, WA opening Thursday, September 7 and running until October 1, 2006.
