First Friday at Gallery One
Opening Reception: May 5, 5-7 pm
Opening Sponsor: Chris Schmidt, KValley Computers and Internet
Opening Introductions: 5:45 pm
Exhibition Dates: May 4 – May 27

In May, Gallery One celebrates spring with a collaborative show in the main gallery and mezzanine, “The Garden from Both Sides of the Gate,” by fiber artist, Louise Kodis and photographer, Gay Waldman. The exhibit is an organic intersection of Louise’s shaped and stitched fabrics, which flow throughout the gallery space, and Gay’s unique manipulated digital prints. Upstairs in the Eveleth Green Gallery, nine members of the ColorWorks group exhibit their most recent art work. An opening reception for both shows takes place at Gallery One on Friday, May 5 from 5 – 7 p.m., with artist introductions beginning at 5:45 p.m.

“The Garden from Both Sides of the Gate” exhibition is an investigation of Louise and Gay’s mutual fascination with the glowing colors and undulating shapes of the botanical world, such as leaves, petals and budding blooms. A variety of compatible visual presentations include box-framed pieces, large and small hanging screens, and hand-painted photographs floating on stitched fabric mats. Their collective inspiration explores the idea of surprise as one enters into a garden’s brilliant splendor.

The colors, shapes and fabrics used in Louise’s sculptural work are intended to bring a spirit of pleasure and satisfaction to the viewer. Gay’s artistic approach blends her photography and digital imaging skills with hand-coloring and collage techniques, which add brilliance and depth to the images. Both artists live and work in Spokane, WA and have exhibited their work nationally, as well as received numerous awards for their talents.

This month, ColorWorks artists, Bonnie Allen, Edna Bjorge, Pat Davis, Sharon Hull, Jeannie Johnson, Sharon Meredith, Kathie Milligan, Gwen Rock, and Tanya Wyant exhibit their work in the Eveleth Green Gallery. The group was conceived four years ago by Marge Corman, a painter who wished to paint “en plein aire.” She initially invited a few friends to join her and now the group has grown to include sixteen artists, who work in a variety of mediums, including oil pastels, colored pencils, pen and ink, oil paints, and watercolors.

Every Friday morning throughout spring, summer and fall, one may come across the art group somewhere in the Kittitas Valley painting and/or drawing vistas, valleys, local architecture, and gardens. During the cold months of winter, ColorWorks meets inside at the Public Utility District Conference Room where the group concentrates on still-life arrangements or photographed ideas.

Gallery One Resident Artist studios will also be open for viewing during the First Friday Art Walk. For more information about Gallery One’s May exhibitions, please contact the gallery at 408 N. Pearl, 509.925.2670 or visit us online at www.gallery-one.org.
