Gallery One and Theatre Majors of CWU are thrilled to invite you to experience a spring puppet workshop for kids ages 6-10. Come and make a puppet, learn how to tell a story, and working with other puppeteers, create your own puppet show to share with family and friends!
Thanks to the Charlotte Y. Martin Foundation, workshop fees will only be $20!
Fee includes material and original puppet performance by CWU Theatre Students.

This fun event will follow Dachshund’s on Parade and give artists of all ages and skill levels a chance to play while learning a few basic drawing techniques. All materials and free beverages are provided.
SIP & SCULPT June 19 (6-9pm)
With Sarah Haven
Join Sarah Haven for an evening of free Handbuilding. Experiment with slab building, pinch pots, coil building and slump molds. Participants will play with different methods with an emphasis on process and not the end product. You won’t leave with a finished piece, but you will gain the knowledge of how to All materials are provided along with free beverages.
GALLERY ONE SUMMER WORKSHOPS
RAKU with Ruth Allan - June 23& 24 - $150
(ceramic artist from Wenatchee)

Learn how to fire your pots using the Raku process and observe demonstrations of finishing and surface development that you can practice later.
Ruth Allan is a professional potter whose work is shown and collected throughout the United States, Japan, Korea and New Zealand. She has an MFA in painting and design with more than 40 years of experience in pottery. Her works are included in 10 books. She teaches ceramics at Wenatchee Valley College.
Skill Level: Beginning to advanced
Day One – Participants will glaze pots and observe finishing and surface development techniques that can be used later.
Day Two – Participants will participate in a Raku firing of their vessels.
Material fee: A $25 material fee will include all supplies and 3 bisque-fired vessels. The fee will be reduced to only $5 if participants bring their own vessels (maximum 6” high and 4” diameter).
FIGURE DRAWING with Natalie Schmidt-Dotzauer - July 7 & 8 - $150
Learn to draw the human form. This 12-hour session introduces participants to the basics of live figure drawing. Participants will be guided through a series of exercises that reveal the mysteries of portrait drawing as well as how to capture the figure in motion and proportional figure rendering. All levels are welcome, no experience required.
Natalie is a professor of drawing at the Central Washington University and Yakima Valley Community College. She received her masters from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco in Painting and Drawing and her undergraduate degree from Central Washington University. She lives in rural Thorp, WA where she has a screenprinting studio and is currently preparing for her solo show at PUNCH Gallery in Seattle.

BEGINNING LAMPWORK with Serena Smith - July 14 & 15
$170 ($40 material fee)

Lampwork is the process of making glass beads with a hand-held torch. Participants will become familiar and comfortable working with hot glass to make beautiful beads.
Born and raised in Yakima, Serena Smith now lives in The Dalles, OR, where she owns her own studio and teaches various levels of lampworking and glass fusing. She has a BFA in glass from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BA in philosophy from the Univ. of WA. She first learned to melt glass with a torch at Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle but is primarily self-taught. Her work is shown in galleries and exhibitions (including some books) throughout the United States.
Day One – Participants will become familiar with hot glass and learn basic bead making, surface design (dots, lines, swirls, and raking), and make glass beads.
Day Two – Participants will be given more advanced techniques (bubble inclusion, encasing, pick-ups, dichroic glass, and sculpting) and will have more torch time to work.
Skill Level: Beginning to intermediate
Supplies: Participants MUST bring sunglasses. Bring any stainless steel shaping tools such as welding pokers, wire mesh, butter knife, tweezers, etc.
Materials Fee: A $40 fee provides participants with bead mandrels, bead release, glass rods, and all supplies needed to begin. Hot head torches and tanks will be provided. Extra supplies will be available to purchase from the artist.
OIL PASTELS with Bob Fisher- July 21 & 22 - $150 ($15 material fee)
This workshop will center on different oil pastel techniques: layering, scraping, resist and mixed media approaches. Experimentation is directed toward the development of expressive and painterly images. Color theory and composition will be discussed, plus handling, storage and presentation.
Bob Fisher has been chair of the Dept. of Visual Arts at Yakima Valley Community College for 29 years. He graduated from the Univ. of WA in 1978 with a double major in painting and art history and received his MFA in painting from Central WA University in 1982. He shows in galleries and juried exhibits in the Pacific Northwest.
Day One – Participants will practice five oil pastel techniques and end with an evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of each technique.
Day Two – The focus is on the completion of one or more images using oil pastel and will end with a critique. Handling, storage, and presentation will also be covered.
Skill Level: Beginning to advanced
Supplies: Participants will need a set of quality oil pastels. A detailed list will be provided upon registration.
Material Fee: A $15 fee will provide participants with two sheets of Rives BFK drawing paper, India ink, mineral spirits, and miscellaneous supplies. Additional sheets of paper will be available for purchase.
